The book

Felt enthusiasts recognise them immediately, love to attend their workshops, appreciate their techniques and self-dyed material and are impressed by their extraordinary work. The nine felt-artists who are featured in this gallery book are so different as their work and their appearance in public. Ricarda Aßmann and Hans König show the reader small, almost intimate bits and pieces from their life and tell together with the nine impressive personalities humorous, profound and touching stories.

As reader you can watch how garment-master Inge Bauer plays with colours and unusual structures or how Dutch art therapist Inge Evers crosses in her work the borders to other art form like collage, decollage, poetry, sculpture, silk paper making, painting and drawing. Claudia U. Gemein takes the reader to her larger than life-sized installations which she stages in special places. Claudia Merx demands high standards of herself and the material which becomes obvious in her seamlessly looking, mainly white-only objects. The reader can be astonished at the rich varieties of the expert in wool sorts and qualities Lyda Rump as well as of the combination of divers textiles techniques like crocheting, knitting, weaving in combination with felt of Charlotte Sehmisch. A unusual alternative to a tomb or a cinerary urn offers Bertina Slettenhaar with her »cocoons« – very personal vessels who allow the bereaved to express their grief. Curiosity and love of experimentation is visible in the work of Karen Betty Tobias who creates with her surface structures a combination of soft, fluent and hard, stiff and stable materials. Ground plan, room, space and home are Margarete Warth’s subjects. Her thoughts, ideas and designs are translated into felt objects – in tissue, drawing and room installations.

»FilzFrauen« is a tribute to talent, eagerness to experiment, curiosity and the huge passion for the textile.

Each artist is represented by a huge amount of images. If you are not able to read the German texts, you can use this book as a pure picture book and tell your own story from your impressions.
