The book

Hats – garments – surfaces – reliefs: Charlotte Sehmisch’s creative process, can be comprehended by the reader in this book, based on her varied works. She plays with textile techniques such as crocheting, knitting, weaving and she combines it in a creative way with felting. This results in unmistakable surfaces. Placing technique, slat elements, folds, chambers, snakes, felt grids and plaited fabrics become fashionable dress creations. When her hands work unique head covers develop for example, where »hat and head lead kind of a dialogue«.

The reader can feel the influence of her architecture studies on Charlotte Sehmisch’s meticulous work on detail. Her felt reliefs produce special light and shadow effects. By varying the size, arrangement and alignment of the individual cavities, geometric effects come to life. But it is only the peculiarity of the hand-worked felt – namely, to never be able to achieve absolute perfection with it – that makes these spatial experiments appear alive in our own eyes.

»It is exciting to focus all thoughts on what is to be made, to assess the material, to predict and plan the effects, and to direct the process in a desired direction with the material, so to speak, and then in the most positive way – to find compromises with the felt, to welcome thoughtful mistakes as a constructive force and to integrate them into the results.«

Short texts by the author on her experiences give the book a personal character, while quotations from the poem »The Center« by José Saramago give her hands their own intuition. A galery book with many extraordinary, individually set, enchanting felt creations.
